The drama continues to pour out from the 2019 Monster Energy AMA Supercross an FIM World Championship! Through three races there have been three surprise winners and last Saturday night it was Red Bull KTM’s Cooper Webb nailing down his first career 450SX victory. He did it in dominating fashion, pulling three great starts and finishing 1-1-3 in the Main Events. It was the first Triple Crown event of the season and the racers were tested with three 12 minute main events with the lowest combined score deciding the winner. Let’s take a look at the top 10 of the 450SX class:

1. Cooper Webb: Webb showed he had serious firepower at the opening round of the championship by coming from dead last to 5th in the rain. Round 2 wasn’t so kind to him as he posted a 10th respectively. That said, when the gate dropped in the first main event, he was extremely strong and passed Ken Roczen in the last corner to take the win. He rode phenomenally the rest of the night and delivered a huge win.

2. Marvin Musquin: Kind of quiet for the first two rounds, Musquin showed more speed at round 3 landing on the podium in all three 450SX Main Events. A lingering knee injury may be subsiding because he looked like everyone expected him to look in the opening rounds. A win should be coming soon from the No. 25.

3. Eli Tomac: Tomac is always strong with the Triple Crown format. In addition to being the Million Dollar winner at the Monster Energy Cup, he is also the 2018 Triple Crown Champion. Rather than the blazing speed we have seen in previous seasons, Eli has been consistent thus far and after a third straight podium finish he sits two points behind series leader Ken Roczen. Is this a new Tomac with more of a championship mindset? He’s right where he needs to be.

4. Ken Roczen: Very similar to Tomac, Roczen has been a model of consistency through three rounds and made it out of the night still holding on to the point lead. His 2-5-4 main event finishes weren’t spectacular, but hidden in there is the fact that he went down in the whoops in main event two and had to really charge for that 5th.

5. Dean Wilson: 5th overall on the night and 6th in championship points is the story for Wilson. Dean struggled with starts all night, but is right there on speed. An interesting note is that Wilson has earned 6 more championship points than defending champion Jason Anderson.

6. Cole Seely: Seely had a good night going until the third main event where he struggled to a 13th. A thing to remember with Cole is that he is still coming back from a serious injury in 2018. His speed has been increasing with each passing round and a podium should be on the horizon.

7. Aaron Plessinger: It’s hard to say if Plessinger is where he should be or if he is underperforming. He hasn’t gotten a good start all year yet, but have proven he is a top ten stalwart. It’s always a big learning curve for 450SX rookies and look for “AP” to continue to progress during the next few rounds.

8. Joey Savatgy: Joey was pretty good after shaking off a big crash in Glendale that set him out for the night. He almost pulled the holeshot in the second main event and like fellow rookie Plessinger, Savatgy is learning the ropes of the premier division.

9. Jason Anderson: Anderson never really got going at Anaheim and seemed to struggle to find his normal rhythm. A dismal 17th in the third main event dashed his hopes for a good points night and it will be interesting to see how the defending champion rebounds next week in Oakland. A race he won last year.

10. Justin Barcia: Bam Bam was having a pretty good night going 7-3 in the first two main events before a huge crash in the third ended things. While he was carted off the track, he should be back for Oakland next weekend.

250SX

It’s been awesome in the 250SX Western Regional Division! Three different winners thus far, and this time around it was Shane McElrath earning victory with steady 3-2-1 main event scores. In the first main event it was looking like Adam Cianciarulo was going to dominate as he charged out to a commanding lead before losing his front wheel around a corner in a weird crash. He would recover to finish 4th, then struggle mightily in the second main event with more crashes and a 14th place finish. Adam would salvage the night with a runner up in main event three, but is now 4th in series points. Meanwhile Colt Nichols rode well for the third week in a row and will take the red plates to Oakland. Only 8 points separate the top four in this class!

So, Oakland is up next! Will we see the 4th different winner in as many weeks? It’s crazy to imagine that Anderson, Roczen and Tomac have yet to win! As far as the championship goes it is still very much up in the air. What a season so far!
