Oakland Race Report
HUNTERSVILLE, N.C. (Jan. 31, 2016) – O.co Coliseum in Oakland, Calif. was the site of round four of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross Championship. 46,949 fans were in attendance and Fox Sports One aired all of the racing action live. As reported earlier, Phillip Nicoletti substituted for Justin Barcia who is recovering from surgery to repair a torn thumb ligament.
Fox Sports One aired a special feature about Nicoletti and his unique role as a substitute rider for the Autotrader/Monster Energy/Yamaha Team. Nicoletti races the entire Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Championship but trains hard all year so he can seamlessly step in and ride supercross if Justin Barcia or Weston Peick becomes injured. Several members of the team were interviewed as well as broadcast announcer Jeff Emig provided insights and commentary during the segment that was just over three minutes long.
Peick transferred directly to the main event through Heat Race Two, with Nicoletti earning a gate in Semi Two. Peick began the main inside the top-10 running eighth after the conclusion of lap one, with Nicoletti 15th. Nicoletti was advancing when he suffered a crash on lap five. He rejoined the race in 22nd. Peick was consistently in the top-10 the entire race until the final lap when he went down, he was able to remount and finish 11th. Nicoletti finished 19th.
Round five of the 2016 Monster Energy Supercross Championship will be held in Glendale, Ariz. at University of Phoenix Stadium on Feb. 6. Fox Sports Two will broadcast the first hour of racing live starting at 10:00 p.m. (EST), and then Fox Sports One will broadcast the remaining hour live.
